Step 1: Establishing your power need

Firstly we need to establish the primary type of power you require from your generator.

Standby power offers a backup source when there is an interruption to the normal source of power for example a power cut. The generator may take a few minutes to start.

Prime power is the need for power where there is no primary source available or the source is unreliable or expensive – it is often needed in remote areas such as farms, on building sites or military bases. You receive prime power for an unlimited period of time.

Step 2: Sizing your generator

Size refers to the power rating of your generator, which will depend on all the equipment/appliances you want to operate. As a guide use the kVA/kW calculator to find out how much power you need, or, if you know the power rating type straight into the box provided.

Enter your electric power current needs in Amperes (amps).

Enter the voltage coming into your home or business.

Choose single-phase or three-phase.

This calculator will provide an approximate value and should not be substituted for actual calculations delivered by a licensed engineer or contractor.

Step 3: Powering your generator

What fuel will you be using to power your generator?

There are advantages and disadvantages of using each fuel type - diesel generators are usually considered more efficient, rugged and easier to maintain but generators powered by renewable sources are more environmentally friendly. We stock a range of diesel, gas and renewable energy generators.

  • Diesel
  • Gas
  • Renewable source e.g. landfill, anaerobic digester, sewage, animal waste and mine gases

Step 4: Optional equipment

There is a range of optional equipment available that can be added to your generator, including;

  • Is your generator going to be installed outside? If so, you may want a highly corrosion resistant weather protective enclosure to protect you purchase.
  • Is your generator going to be installed close to a residential area? If so, you will need a sound attenuated enclosure to ensure you comply with noise legislation.
  • Do you need a bunded base tank* incorporated within your generator set? Bunded base tanks provide containment for fuel, coolant and lube oil spillage - to comply with Defra regulations.
  • Do you need your generator to be mobile? Some models can be mounted on to a trailer* offering convenience and flexibility.
