Your Sea Safety Engine Checklist
Finning Power Systems has teamed up with the RNLI to bring you this daily engine checklist; a handy guide that will help you to understand the basics of starting, running and checking your engine.
Before You Cast-off
Get to know your engine installation and have the manual on board with you at all times. Make sure you’re familiar with all the engine controls and look out for any signs of wear and tear.
Keep an adequate spares’ kit, especially if you have a single engine craft. This should include impellers, fuel filters, drive belts and fluids.
Don’t take risks; if you’re in any doubt, seek advice before you release the lines!
Pre-start Checks
Run the bilge blower or extractor fan for a few minutes to remove any vapours.
Make sure that belts are not slack or loose and check that they are not split or frayed. Also inspect hoses for any cuts or frays. Keep an eye out for fuel, oil or coolant leaks.
Make sure you have enough fuel for your complete journey. Allow 1/3 of the tank to get to your destination, 1/3 to return and 1/3 as spare.
Remember to open the fuel tap.
Check the water separator bowl for water or dirt and drain off any contamination.
Use the dipstick to check that the oil level is between the ‘min’ and ‘max’ marks and top up if necessary.
Check all other fluid levels are correct including the gearbox oil and any hydraulic systems.
Shut the water sea cock, remove the filter and rinse out any debris. Replace the filter correctly and remember to reopen all the sea cocks.
Keep the freshwater header tank topped up. Use a water and antifreeze mix with a ratio of 50/50.
Check to see if your boat has an exhaust temperature alarm too. If it sounds, you may need to clear a blockage in the water strainer.
Switch on the batteries and do not turn them off while the engine is running. If you have voltmeters, check your voltage read-out too.
Let the engine run for a while. You should allow between 3 and 5 minutes before you cast-off. Check that there is a good flow of water from the exhaust pipe.
Don’t stop taking care of your engine when the boating season comes to an end!
- Open the sea cocks and flush clean water through the sea water inlet until it drains out of the exhaust.
- Check the fuel lines for any blockages
- Make sure you have your engine maintained regularly by your manufacturer’s authorised dealer and once a year, have your fuel tanks inspected internally and then fill them up.
